ANALOG
Between 1972 and 1981 the Santa Fe acquired a fleet of 187 SD40-2's for its transcontinental main line freight trains. Starting in the late 1980's the Santa Fe started a program of lowering the head lights of locomotives from the traditional location between the number boards near the top of the cab to a position in the nose of the unit. This modification, along with other changes such as the relocation of the air horns and the addition of ditch lights, have brought the old veterans up to today's safety and crew comfort standards.
